Carquinez Strait Bridge Deck Fabrication Consultant
Structural analyses associated with deck girder fabrication was provided on the new (third) Carquinez Strait Bridge. Working with the fabricator of the deck girders, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries of Japan (IHI), construction documents were prepared to be submitted to CalTrans for fabrication approval. The new bridge is the longest bridge constructed in the United States in over 40 years and the first new suspension bridge in over 35 years. The deck is an aerodynamically shaped closed steel box girder – the first in the country. IHI developed a detailed step-by-step procedure for assembling and storing the deck sections. Each step of the procedure imposed a new load case with differing stresses and deflections that our engineers considered and accounted for.
