George Washington Bridge Rehabilitation

Othmar Ammann designed the George Washington Bridge in 1931 while he was the Chief Engineer for the Port Authority of NY and NJ and the firm completed his vision with the design of the lower deck. Currently the firm is in the early stages of a comprehensive program to replace all of the suspender ropes and rehabilitate the main cables and cable strands, which are all original construction and well over 70 years old. The cable and strand rehabilitation involves an alternative study for non-destructive testing and dehumidification options. The project will also include the replacement of sidewalks, hand rails and electrical components, including the iconic necklace lighting on the cables.
